Maximum width
This value defines how long the lock stitches in relation to the total stitch length of the satin stitch are allowed to become. Normally the tack and lock stitches are embroidered in their original length, only the starting point is set relatively to the width of the satin. But if the satin is very small, and the tack stitches would be too long, they are shortened according to the value you defined here. So the tack and lock stitches will not look out of the satin.
